Food for Thought

September 18, 2013

I spotted this neon red dragonfly perched on a lotus.  I moved closer hoping to capture the scene.  No sooner had I snapped these pictures, then my daughter started panicking;  “Get away from it!  It’s poisonous! They bite… AND, they sting!”

Red Dragonfly

As a publIc service (yeah, right) I decided to do some playground myth busting.  As it turns out Dragonflies are vicious… but not towards humans.  They will fiercely seek out and devour all sorts of pesky insects (and don’t get me started on their disturbing reproductive habits).  Dragonflies don’t spontaneously bite people (and, for the record they don’t have stingers), but they might give it a go if you catch/harass them.  Even if they do try and do you harm, it won’t likely hurt.  But, if you are a mosquito—live in fear.

If by chance these tasty morsels of  information have left you hungry, the internet is full of dragonfly recipes.  According to budgettravel.com dragonflies taste like soft-shell crab.  No need to pass me the insect satay though, I’m content to feast on them exclusively with my eyes.
